We had a fantastic dinner tonight at Luz. Real gastronomy with mostly local products. The scallops and the octopus were absolutely fantastic. The wallaby was also amazingly delicious. The service was excellent and still very friendly. We will come every time we visit Launceston.
My wife and I dined at Luz last night. Cute little place, quiet and relaxed ambiance, two very friendly and attentive wait staff. Menu is fairly small but still felt like plenty of options. Good list of local wines. We had the scallaps to start, which were delicious. Great flavour balance. We then had the wallaby with cauliflower puree, onion and jus and the market fish - blue eyed trevally with beurre blanc, pearl barley and corn. The wallaby was good, absolutely no complaints but the standout was the fish. Truly incredible flavour, texture and balance. Now, we'd read some of the other reviews here about the chef's strong reaction to feedback and were curious - and not disappointed. Not long after we arrived and ordered, the chef came out to address some feedback that the fish was so dry as to be inedible. He was polite but strained at first, in explaining that two other patrons ordered the fish at the same time, cooked in the same pan and loved it, so she would have to pay for the fish rather than have it taken off the bill. She said, fine, I just won't eat then, and he offered to make her some popcorn (which is the free appetiser they bring out before the food). He turned to leave, she muttered something under her breath that I couldn't make out, and he clapped back. Told her she had come with an attitude all night, rolled her eyes at him, poked her tongue out and been rude, so she could leave the restaurant. He then went back to the kitchen. She stayed with her friends for a bit, who all proceeded to finish their meals before paying and leaving. Not gonna lie, was a bit awkward. However, as we realised later - there is no other fish dish on the menu than the one we ordered, which straight up was the best fish dish we've had this year. So I honestly can't work out what she would've had to complain about. Chef came out to us after we'd finished our meal and was stoked we liked it so much and was quite polite to us. Just seems really passionate about his food and wants to be treated with respect. So all in all, giving it 5 stars for great food, lovely wait staff, and a show during dinner.
2nd visit We came to dine at Luz two weeks ago and couldn't resist another meal. The food is divine. We had the octopus for the 3rd time now, it's just too good. The tender venison ragu with the soft velvety gnocchi was perfect. The duck was tender also, it was so amazing, perfectly paired with the beetroot puree (just divinely made), red cabbage and jus. I will still be dreaming of this meal tomorrow. The lemon tart was delicious, love how it's not too sweet and even the bourbon vanilla ice cream tasted like the chef made it as it wasn't too sweet. We met and spoke to the chef to compliment his skills. What a lovely person he was. Such an enjoyable evening. The staff once again were so friendly and caring that we were enjoying our meal. Just wish we could come here more often. Thank you again. 1st visit What a wonderful place to dine, the atmosphere was lovely, the waitress was lovely and friendly. They really care. The food was exquisite, the Pork cheek with gnocchi and jus was amazing. The homemade gnocchi were the best I have ever eaten. The crusted lamb and potato gratin, delicious. The octopus was the best octopus we have eaten and we have had many. We ordered another after the meal instead of dessert. Thank you for a lovely experience. Highly recommend this place.
We stopped in for dinner with friends while passing through town and were absolutely blown away. The experience was phenomenal from start to finish. Layla and Louis, were incredibly kind and made sure we had everything we needed. You can tell how much care goes into the food here; every dish is so well-thought-out and executed. I was so impressed by the head chef's caution with dietary restrictions-he even brought out the packages of the ingredients to walk us through what was in our food. Even the seemingly simple entrรฉes, like the roasted cauliflower variation and the Tasmanian octopus, were absolutely unforgettable. We finished with the apple tarte tatin, which was the perfect sweet ending. This was easily a 5+ star dining experience, and am already looking for an excuse to come back!
My husband and I had a fabulous dinner tonight. Food was superb (he had gnocchi and I had fish) and dessert was to die for. My new fave dessert is the Baked Alaska (with raspberry ice-cream and coulis). The tartness of the raspberry was perfect with the sweet meringue. And most exciting is they have good non-alcoholic wine and really good mocktails (not just a mix of fruit juices). So tired of LLB or soft drink. Atmosphere was perfect for a special night out. Thank you, we'll be back for sure
