Have not been to the bistro for a number of years ...decided to celebrate christmas eve there. Was surprised by its amazing new location. The overall food and service experience have seen to get better but we ended up dining on our old bistro favourites. Quality of the food has got better. An evening of french onion soup , chateaubriand and an amazing lemon tart Was presented to our table by professional staff. It was great and they still offer BYO wine and much surprised its free on sunday. Overall a great night and we will be comming more regularly. We felt guilty we had not been back sooner.
Macleay St Bistro delights with refined French cuisine, combining classic techniques with flair, finesse, and elegance. Highlights included the fresh, briny Sydney rock oysters, the savoury French onion soufflé, and the rich chicken liver parfait. The duck breast was tender and full of flavour, served with peaches, shallots, and Armagnac jus. Dessert provided a perfect finish - a vibrant, indulgent lemon tart with crème fraîche. Service is warm, welcoming, and attentively delivered. Staff strike the ideal balance between professionalism and genuine hospitality, ensuring a relaxed and enjoyable dining experience. The dining room is elegant and intimate, with soft lighting, classic bistro touches, and a quietly luxurious atmosphere. Macleay St Bistro is a standout for anyone seeking beautifully crafted French cuisine, charming service, and an ambiance that feels both timeless and indulgent.
Had a fabulous lunch with wonderful friends up from Melb. We ate way too much and enjoyed absolutely everything. Service and atmosphere was excellent. Loud, fun. Forgot to take more photos. The scallop entree was delicious. I had the steak, medium rare with pepper sauce was about 7/10. All in all, I recommend.
We had the most amazing dining experience at Macleay Street Bistro the other night. The waiters were so attentive and looked after us with great care. The food was as exceptional as ever. Having been there many times, it just gets better every time. Macleay Street Bistro is said to be the grande old dame of French Restaurants in Sydney because it has been around for about 40 years. But I must say there is nothing old about MSB. In its recently new abode, with its beautiful decor and fit-out, this is a world class restaurant to visit. Such a beautiful place to sit end enjoy a great meal. For entree I had the twice baked souffle cooked to perfection with bubbling cheese around the edges, we and considered it to be one of the best ever. Others in my party had the salmon tartare so theatrically presented under a smoke-filled glass dome. The main course of steak frites and fillet steak were equally delicious and just as well presented with such care. After the dinner, when the restaurant was a bit quieter, the chef greeted us at our table and he took time to engage with us and make the evening even more special. For a French restaurant experience in Sydney Macleay Street Bistro is the best in town.
A Culinary Masterpiece in Sydney – Macleay St Bistro is a Must-Visit! Visiting from Miami, I had high expectations for Sydney’s dining scene, and Macleay St Bistro completely blew me away. This charming bistro delivers an unforgettable experience with impeccable flavors, warm hospitality, and a level of quality that rivals the best restaurants in the world. From the very first bite, it was clear that every dish was crafted with passion. The triple-baked cheese soufflé was pure decadence—light, airy, and packed with rich, cheesy goodness. The prawns bisque was velvety smooth, bursting with deep, complex seafood flavors. Then came the eye fillet, cooked to absolute perfection, and the lamb shoulder, which melted in my mouth like butter. To top it all off, the chocolate fondue was the perfect indulgence—rich, silky, and utterly addictive. And then, there’s Stefano, the sommelier, who took the experience to another level. His warm smile and deep knowledge of wines made every pairing feel like a personal recommendation from an old friend. And let me just say—his espresso martini? Easily the best I’ve ever had, hands down. Macleay St Bistro is an absolute gem, a place where every detail is executed to perfection. If you’re in Sydney and want a dining experience that will linger in your memory long after the last bite, this is it. 10/10, I’ll be dreaming about this meal from across the ocean!
